The possibility of tax cuts in the UK has been brought to the forefront by the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, just ahead of the Conservative party's annual conference in Manchester. Hunt indicated that although immediate tax cuts weren't feasible, the welfare budget might face reductions in the future to finance this endeavor.

Hunt stressed that the welfare system needed to strike a balance between incentives and obligations. He expressed concerns that around 100,000 people annually transitioned from employment to receiving benefits without the requirement to seek work. According to him, this situation underscored the need for a more effective system.
Former Prime Minister, Liz Truss, has been vocal about the need for tax cuts in the UK, citing the strain it puts on family budgets and the stagnation of the economy. In 2022-23, the UK government's welfare spending is expected to drop to approximately £230 billion from the previous year's £234 billion. This comes amidst growing calls for tax cuts from within the Conservative party. Hunt addressed these concerns, tying them to the government's current welfare expenditure.
Following the 2019 election, the Conservative party has struggled with the task of decreasing massive tax hikes, which are the most substantial since the end of World War II. As per the Institute for Fiscal Studies, taxes will constitute approximately 37% of the country's revenue. This indicates an added responsibility of £3,500 for each family. Even though Hunt has already indicated a lack of tax reductions in the upcoming autumn announcement, an increasing group of Conservative MPs, including Liz Truss, have voiced their dissent against any tax increases specified in the autumn declaration.
With a general election anticipated in 2024, the Chancellor could utilize his spring budget to unveil tax cuts before the publication of the next Tory manifesto. Hunt emphasized the need for a credible plan to lower taxes while acknowledging the current limitations on such reductions. The debate over taxation and welfare budget reductions is likely to remain a key focus in the political landscape of the UK.
