The Brazilian Supreme Court has taken strong action against the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, ordering its suspension in the country. This firm move comes after the platform failed to appoint a legal representative within the allotted time. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has been in a protracted dispute with Musk since April, mandated the "immediate, complete, and total suspension" of X's operations in Brazil. This suspension will remain in effect until all court orders are complied with, fines are paid, and a new legal representative is appointed.
The Brazilian Telecommunications Agency was given 1 day to enforce this decision, which requires approx. 20,000 internet service providers to block access to social media platform X. The agency’s president, Carlos Manuel Baigorri, confirmed that the order had been passed on to these providers, and it is expected that the block will be fully implemented by the end of the weekend. Justice Moraes initially stated an order for Apple and Google to prevent access to the X app on their platforms, as well as to block VPN usage. However, this part of the order was later suspended to avoid unnecessary disruptions to these third-party companies.
The conflict between Musk and the Brazilian authorities escalated after Musk refused to comply with the court's orders, branding them as censorship. This led to fines and further legal actions, including the freezing of local bank accounts for Musk's other company, Starlink. Despite these measures, Musk has remained defiant, criticizing Brazil's actions as oppressive and an attempt to silence the truth. The situation has drawn criticism from legal experts, particularly regarding the freezing of Starlink's accounts, which they argue is unrelated to X's legal issues.
This ongoing conflict highlights the broader issues of governance and regulation of global tech giants, particularly in countries with stringent legal frameworks. The outcome of this legal battle could set significant precedents for how other nations handle similar disputes with powerful tech companies.
